The Most Critical Years of Development

The first year of life is a time of extraordinary growth, and at the YMCA of Central New Mexico, we are committed to providing infants with a safe, nurturing, and developmentally supportive environment during these critical early months.

Our infant program is grounded in a play-based philosophy that supports physical, mental, and emotional development through loving care, sensory exploration, and responsive interaction. Because infants are still developing their immune systems, we take exceptional care to ensure their health and safety. Infant rooms are kept completely sanitary, with cribs and toys disinfected daily. During diaper changes, staff follow a strict sanitation protocol, including disinfecting the changing station after every use.

Each infant has their own crib, which is used only during sleep. When awake, babies participate in age-appropriate activities designed to encourage fine and gross motor development, sensory exploration, and early language skills. Music, singing, reading, finger play, and constant verbal engagement help foster early socialization, self-awareness, and cognitive development.

We understand that every baby is unique. Our infant care program follows each child’s individual schedule for feeding, sleeping, playing, and cuddling—never forcing infants into a predetermined routine. Families receive a detailed daily report outlining activities, feedings, diaper changes, naps, and any new developmental milestones observed throughout the day.
