YMCA Community Schools Division:
The YMCA is proud to partner with the ABC Community Schools Partnership, to create the YMCA Community Schools Division, focusing on community school’s strategies, mindsets, and supports. A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. Its integrated focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development and community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities. Community schools offer a personalized curriculum that emphasizes real-world learning and community problem-solving. Schools become centers of the community and are open to everyone – all day, every day, evenings and weekends.
Using public schools as hubs, community schools bring together many partners to offer a range of supports and opportunities to children, youth, families and communities. The YMCA partners with APS community schools work to achieve these results: Children are ready to enter school; students attend school consistently; students are actively involved in learning and their community; families are increasingly involved with their children’s education; schools are engaged with families and communities; students succeed academically; students are healthy – physically, socially, and emotionally; students live and learn in a safe, supportive, and stable environment, and communities are desirable places to live.
The YMCA of CNM Community Schools Division provides before/afterschool programming for grades K-8th grade during the school year and a ten week summer program for youth. The YMCA’s mission is to empower all children and teens to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens through academic, social and emotional support. Our before and afterschool programs provide youth with YMCA programming in our core program areas: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. We achieve this by offering diverse, culturally responsive activities in the arts, sports, fitness and recreation, character development, education, leadership, and career development. The YMCA afterschool programs run weekly programs that benefit its members and the community, with special emphasis on homework, tutoring, and remediation supports; to ensure that all of our children are academically and socially successful.
