Advocacy
One of the ways the YMCA of Central New Mexico encourages social responsibility is through grassroots community organization and advocacy.
New Mexico State Alliance
Made possible through a grant from YMCA of the USA, the YMCA of Central New Mexico and the Family Y in Los Alamos have have joined together to create a vibrant, thriving alliance that can advocate for our communities. As part of YMCA Advocacy Days, for example our alliance and policy volunteers visit Washington, DC to meet with Senators and Congressional representatives to discuss issues relevant to New Mexico.
Youth & Government
Our Youth and Government program teaches New Mexican high school students democracy through experiential learning. School Advisors work with their students to learn about bill writing, supporting their bill, and acting as Senators and legislators. Students also participate in Supreme Court and Press Corp experiences.
Michelle Goffe Rose Garden
For 17 years, the McLeod YMCA teens lovingly tended to a garden located at Congregation Albert dedicated to the memory of former YMCA kid and lifeguard, Michelle Goffe. Side–by–side with Michelle’s parents, YMCA kids have learned how to care for a rose garden from inception. Year after year, kids who love the rose garden continue to enjoy this compassionate project.
YMCA Turkey Team
For a decade, the McLeod YMCA Board of Directors have organized the Turkey Team, a community project to serve 75 families with Thanksgiving baskets. Each year, the Y Afterschool programs organize a canned food drive and board members and volunteers work together to make healthy food baskets for the holidays. This is a large undertaking managed beautifully by a compassionate group of volunteers. Interested in joining, email Stephanie Browne.
Elev8 Civic Engagement Crew
Our staff plan monthly service learning projects in the Albuquerque community. Email if your teen is interested in participating.
